There’s something so special about turning your wedding into more than one really beautiful day. A destination wedding weekend gives you the chance to bring your favorite people somewhere incredible and actually have time to enjoy being there together. This wedding in Cefalù, Italy, is such a good example of what that can look like, beautiful surroundings, an intimate celebration, incredible food, and plenty of moments that didn’t feel rushed or overly planned. When your guests are traveling that far to celebrate with you, creating an experience around the wedding makes the entire trip feel even more meaningful.

Start Your Destination Wedding Weekend With a Welcome That Feels Like You
A welcome event doesn’t have to feel like a second wedding reception. Honestly, the best ones are often the opposite. Think cocktails overlooking the water, a backyard pizza night, rooftop drinks, a picnic, or a long casual dinner where everyone can settle in and catch up. It’s less about planning another impressive event and more about giving everyone a place to land after traveling.
This is also one of my favorite things about wedding weekends because you get so much more time with your people. Instead of trying to squeeze meaningful conversations into cocktail hour or the reception, everyone already has time together before the wedding even begins. It immediately changes the pace of the weekend and helps the wedding day itself feel more relaxed.

Let the Destination Become Part of the Experience
If you’re asking everyone to travel somewhere beautiful, give them a chance to actually experience it. In a coastal town like Cefalù, that could mean wandering through town, spending an afternoon by the water, grabbing drinks together, or planning a group meal filled with local food. Somewhere completely different might mean hiking, skiing, wine tasting, or simply hanging out by the pool.
You don’t necessarily need to organize every hour for everyone, either. A few thoughtful activities mixed with plenty of free time can be way more enjoyable than a packed itinerary. Give your guests ideas and opportunities to experience the destination while still leaving room for them to explore, rest, and make the trip their own.

Make Food a Part of Your Destination Wedding Weekend
Food is one of the easiest ways to make a destination feel woven into your wedding, and these photos are basically the perfect example. A long table overflowing with local ingredients, colorful plates, candles, bread, fruit, and everyone gathered around it feels like an experience all on its own. Meals can become the moments when everyone slows down, tells stories, pours another drink, and stays at the table a little longer than planned.
Rather than treating dinner as another item on the timeline, think about how it can bring everyone together. Family-style meals, local cuisine, destination-inspired cocktails, late-night snacks, or even a casual breakfast the next morning can all become memorable parts of the weekend. You don’t need to make it complicated, you just want it to feel connected to where you are and the people you brought there.

Leave Room to Actually Be With Your People
This might be the biggest one for me. You can plan the most beautiful destination wedding in the world, but if everyone is constantly being shuffled from one thing to the next, it’s hard to actually enjoy it. Build breathing room into your wedding day and the weekend as a whole so there’s time to linger over dinner, have conversations, take in the view, dance longer, and just be present.
That’s one of the reasons I love photographing wedding weekends so much. I get to document more than the big scheduled moments, I get the conversations around the table, everyone exploring together, the quiet in-between pieces, and all the little things that tell the full story of what it felt like to be there. Those are often the moments that bring you right back to the experience years later.
